Introduction

Introduction to Neck Lift

Everyone deserves to love their face, plain and simple. And there’s nothing wrong with needing a little help to achieve your ideal look. If you see yourself as having problems such as a double chin, extra sagging along your jawline, or the dreaded “turkey neck,” it can feel incredibly frustrating as trying to fix these issues alone is very difficult and sometimes even impossible. For this reason, a neck lift has become a popular choice in the cosmetic industry as hundreds of thousands of patients seek treatment every year, and it might be the right treatment for you, too.

Dunedin Plastic Surgery is conveniently located to provide neck lift surgery to patients in St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Palm Harbor, and the greater Tampa Bay, FL area.

What is a Neck Lift?

A cervicoplaty, more commonly known as a “neck lift,” is a surgical cosmetic procedure designed to define your neck and jawline more, creating a thinner, more youthful look. It does this by targeting sagging skin, loose muscles, and excess fat in the area to smooth and tighten the skin. The key components you may see in a neck lift are:

  • Cervicoplasty: Removing excess skin to address sagging.
  • Platysmaplasty: Tightening or restructuring the neck muscles to reduce banding and improve contour.
  • Liposuction: Removing fat deposits for a slimmer profile.

Not all of these components are necessary to perform in one neck lift and will depend on factors such as your neck anatomy and goals. Working with a highly skilled professional will help determine what is necessary for you.

What Are the Benefits of a Neck Lift?

Neck lifts provide numerous benefits, both physical and mental. Patients who have undergone the procedure have reported that:

  • They feel younger as the removal of excess skin significantly reduces signs of aging.
  • Their face looks slimmer, and they can see a more defined contour from the jawline to their neck.
  • They feel more confident and comfortable in photos and social situations.
  • They appreciate this as a permanent solution.
  • In some cases, patients have even combined this procedure with others, such as a facelift or chin augmentation, for additional results.

Who Are the Best Candidates For a Neck Lift?

As mentioned, neck lifts are great for people experiencing excess skin and fat around their neck and jawline and needing help achieving their ideal look. If you feel like that’s you, make sure you also fit the remaining criteria:

  • In overall good health with no underlying medical conditions that could impair healing (one of our professionals can help you determine this).
  • Don’t smoke or are willing to quit before and after surgery, as this can adversely affect the outcome of the procedure.
  • We are going into this with realistic expectations about the procedure and potential results.

What to Expect on the Day of a Neck Lift?

Once you come into Dunedin Plastic Surgery, we start by sitting down with you, re-reviewing the procedure and after-care details, and answering any final questions. Once you’re comfortable, you will go under either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the details and complexity of the surgery (we will have gone over this with you in your consultation). The procedure takes approximately 2-3 hours to complete, during which time the following steps will happen:

  • Incision placement: Dr. Buck will make discreet incisions behind the ears and possibly under the chin.
  • Tissue adjustment: The underlying neck muscles will be tightened, and excess skin will be trimmed.
  • Fat removal: Liposuction may be used to remove unwanted fat deposits.
  • Closure: The incisions are closed with sutures, and a supportive bandage may be applied to aid healing.

After the surgery is complete, you’ll be closely monitored until it is determined that you are safe to be discharged and placed into the care of a close friend or family member.

Neck Lift Recovery

Recovery from a neck lift can be easily managed with proper care. In the first week, you’ll likely see some swelling, bruising, and tightness around the neck (keeping your head elevated can help reduce swelling). In the few weeks following, patients typically feel comfortable resuming light social activities and returning to work as the bruising fades. After that, the swelling will continue to gradually subside for the next 1-3 months until the final results are revealed.
