Introduction to Lip Lift

Have you been looking for a solution to thinning lips, defining your cupid’s bow, or closing the distance between your top lip and nose? Maybe you thought about getting fillers but would rather pursue a permanent change to avoid the maintenance. If so, consider getting a lip lift, a popular cosmetic procedure that enhances the shape and appearance of the lips by shortening the space between the nose and upper lip. This surgery works to create a more youthful, defined, and proportionate appearance to give your lips a naturally fuller look for good.

Dunedin Plastic Surgery is conveniently located to provide lip lifts to patients in St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Palm Harbor, and the greater Tampa Bay, FL, area.

What is a Lip Lift?

Some may conflate a lip lift with something similar to a lip filler. These are two different treatments, though both aim to enhance the look of the lip. While fillers are a great temporary solution to creating fuller, youthful lips, a lip lift does this permanently through surgery. It works by removing a small strip of skin beneath the nose, which lifts the upper lip and shortens the philtrum (the area between the nose and upper lip) to expose more of the natural lip tissue. This is done to create a more youthful and aesthetically pleasing appearance by better balancing the lips’ proportion and placement with the rest of the face.

A woman with long brown hair and smoky makeup sits outdoors, likely on a boat. She wears a white knitted sleeveless top over a sequined bikini, accessorized with gold hoop earrings and a bracelet. Her confident expression contrasts with the light-toned boat background and wooden decking. - Lip Lift in Dunedin, FL

What Are the Benefits of a Lip Lift?

Lip lifts solve a multitude of problems that many patients face, such as:

  • Shortening the philtrum to create a more youthful and aesthetically balanced appearance.
  • Lifting the upper lip to create a fuller, more defined look.
  • Refining the shape of the upper lip to accentuate the cupid’s bow.
  • Exposing more of the upper teeth enhances the smile and creates a more energetic appearance.

Patients have reported opting for a lip lift because of its permanent results. Maintenance is not an issue once your surgery and recovery process are over.

What to Expect on the Day of Lip Lift Surgery

When you come into our Dunedin Plastic Surgery-approved facility on the day of your surgery, you will be met with our surgical team, who will go over any remaining details of the surgery and aftercare, make sure that you are comfortable, and administer local anesthesia. You’ll be awake during the procedure but not feel any pain. Dr. Buck will carefully mark the area of treatment, then make precise incisions beneath the nos, and remove a small area of skin to lift the top of the lip. This procedure is quick as it only lasts about 1-2 hours, and you’ll be able to return home on the same day and begin recovery treatment.

Lip Lift Recovery

Many patients are surprised to discover that recovery from a lip lift is generally quick and easily manageable.

In the first few days, you should expect some mild swelling, bruising, and tightness around the upper lip area, but this can be minimized with a cold compress. Within the first week, your stitches can be removed, which is when you will start to see the swelling begin to subside. In the weeks after, you’ll likely be able to resume regular social activities as the area continues to heal. Then, it’s pretty much smooth sailing as the swelling subsides until you see full results at the 1-3 month mark.
